Walking trails in Sang and Goorkens are mowed less frequently

The hiking trails in the Sang en Goorkens nature reserve near Mierlo will now be mowed less frequently. We have made this decision to give the area’s fragile ecosystem some peace and space, especially during the breeding season.

Sang en Goorkens is a unique wetland nature reserve southeast of Mierlo. The area is attracting an increasing number of protected and rare bird species, such as the golden oriole and the reed warbler. These birds are sensitive to disturbances, including noise and construction work in the area.

Despite prior inspections, mowing during the breeding season caused disturbances in the area. For this reason, large sections of the hiking trails will now be mowed only once a year, in the fall and outside the breeding season. We are collaborating on this with Staatsbosbeheer and the Aa en Maas Water Board.

As a result, the trails may be less passable in the spring and summer. With sturdy shoes or boots, the trails are expected to remain easily accessible.
