Honorary Citizenship

Honorary citizenship is the highest honor bestowed by the municipality of Geldrop-Mierlo. This special title is awarded in exceptional cases and is intended for individuals who have made a significant contribution to the municipality and have thereby gained national recognition. This may include residents of Geldrop-Mierlo, as well as people from outside the municipality.

Requirements

The award is granted only in exceptional cases to individuals who have made an outstanding contribution in the social, civic, cultural, athletic, or economic spheres. Their dedication or achievement must be of great value to the community of Geldrop-Mierlo and help promote a positive image of the municipality, including beyond the Netherlands.

Requirements honorary citizenship:

  • the person is well-known nationwide;
  • The award is granted only in highly exceptional cases;
  • The performance is exceptional, of high quality, and clearly distinctive;
  • This achievement is important to the residents of Geldrop-Mierlo;
  • the achievement contributes to the reputation and image of Geldrop-Mierlo, both nationally and internationally;
  • Both residents and non-residents are eligible;
  • The person must be of good character.

The city council decides on the award during a closed-door meeting. The honorary citizenship is then officially conferred during a public meeting of the city council, in the presence of the mayor and aldermen.

Honorary citizenship comes with a gold medal and a certificate. The certificate lists the recipient’s name, place of birth, and date of birth, the reason for the award, and the date on which honorary citizenship was granted.
