Refurbishment of Mayor Verheugt Street
We plan to redesign Mayor Verheugt Street (between Santheuvel-West and School Street). The preliminary design was available for public inspection from Friday, November 8 through Thursday, December 19, 2024. A walk-in evening was also held during this period.
The Board of Mayor and Aldermen used the comments received to establish a final design (DO) for the redesign. The following outlines the redesign.
Reason
The Burgemeester Verheugtstraat has a dated road layout. In addition, the city council has previously determined that this residential street should be a residential access road with a maximum speed of 30 km/hour. The road layout needs to be adapted for this purpose.
At the connection of Burgemeester Verheugtstraat to Vaanakker there is also a considerable water issue. Residents experience flooding during heavy rainfall. The sewers and trees need to be replaced.
General
In outline, the roadway and adjacent footpaths will be extended from Dorpsstraat to Burgemeester Verheugtstraat. The current image-defining tree structure will be replaced by a staggered row of trees with undergrowth, which will still maintain a green road image.
Lane
The carriageway will be narrowed from approximately 6.70 m to 5.50 m. This is a usual carriageway width for roads within a 30 km/h area with a low traffic function. At this width, cars and cyclists can pass each other safely. A wider lane leads to higher speeds. The roadway will be constructed in an element pavement, in the same pattern and color scheme as the Village Street. In order to emphasize the 30 km/h regime as much as possible, several axes will be shifted in the roadway. The intersection Burgemeester Verheugtstraat/Vaanakker will be an equivalent intersection.
Footpaths
The sidewalks usually have an effective width of about 1.50 m, executed in a traditional concrete tile. This is also the cable and pipe strip. Disabled exits will be provided at the intersections with Santheuvel-West and Vaanakker.
Parking
The plots on Burgemeester Verheugtstraat have (ample) on-site parking. It is therefore not necessary to create separate public parking spaces. In practice there will be occasional parking on the roadway, mostly by visitors of residents. This is part of a normal 30 km/hour design.
Green
The existing trees that are generally in or against the property boundary of residents will be uprooted. New 1st size trees (end height 15m or more) will be planted in the green spaces between the sidewalk and the roadway. Ground cover will be installed between the new trees. The paved surface will decrease on balance.
Sewer replacement
The sewer system is from 1961 and at the end of its technical lifespan. Due to the many damages of the sewer, such as open cracks and seepage of groundwater, it is wise to replace the sewer during the redevelopment. By replacing the wastewater sewer, we once again ensure proper disposal of wastewater to the sewage treatment plant. While replacing the existing sewers, we also have a rainwater sewer (infiltration sewer) laid. The paved surface is connected to this. This ensures that clean rainwater does not go to the sewage treatment plant, but is infiltrated into the soil.
Water task
During heavy rainfall, the full width of the street regularly floods. The road is then usually impassable to traffic for half an hour. This water is not so much the locally fallen rainwater or water coming up from the sewers. Most of it comes from the higher parts of the Mierlo core, from where it flows over ground level to the Burgemeester Verheugtstraat. In the present project, a wadi will be constructed in the grass field on Schoolstraat to collect rainwater and we are also investigating the possibility of constructing a water storage facility under the bicycle path to Geldropseweg.
Planning
The redevelopment of Mayor Verheugt Street is expected to begin in 2025.
