How does it work?

Did you know that nowadays you can also apply for your driver's license digitally? Not interested in this extra service, you can still visit the town hall.

• Need to apply for your driver's license as a matter of urgency? Then make an appointment before 3 p.m. Please allow for additional fees.
• Bring a valid identity card or passport for identification and a recent passport photo (no older than 6 months).
• If you are applying for a new driver's license to replace your lost driver's license, you will need to make a missing person's statement. You can do this digitally at www.rdw.nl or (during the appointment) at our front desk.
• You pay for your driver's license during the appointment. Preferably pay by PIN.

Pick up driver's license

The driver's license can be picked up without an appointment within the following times:

• Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
• Monday from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
• Wednesday from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.

If you would like to pick up your driver's license outside of these times, please make an appointment via the Make an appointment button on the main page and choose pick up travel document/driving license.

When picking up your driver's license, bring a valid form of identification.

Requirements

• The CBR has given you a certificate of fitness.
• You lived in the Netherlands for at least 184 days in the past year

What to do.

Foreign driving license exchange

Do you want to exchange a foreign driver's license? Then additional Requirements apply. You can read more about exchanging foreign driving licenses on the RDW website .

Youth driving license application

If you are 17 years old, you can apply for a youth driving license. For this you must also apply for a companion pass at the RDW. Read more information about the youth driving license on the website of 2todrive.nl.

Loss or theft of your driver's license

As of July 1, 2021, it will be possible to register a loss or theft report of a Dutch driver's license yourself, 24 hours a day. The report is made online via www.rdw.nl and therefore the driving license is immediately invalidated. After the report is registered, RDW will send you a written confirmation. To report loss, theft or misuse of the driving license online, you need a DigiD. If you do not have a DigiD and/or the application does not succeed online? Then fill out a declaration of loss at your municipality.

With this new service, you are no longer dependent on the opening hours of the municipality and the loss or theft report can be registered at any time.

What does it cost?

Preferably pay by PIN.

What do I need?

• A good-looking passport photo not older than 6 months at the time of application. This passport photo meets the passport photo requirements.
• Cash or a debit card. You pay directly at the time of application.
• When applying for your first driver's license: a valid passport or identity card.
• When renewing your driver's license: the driver's license you already have. If it is no longer valid, please also bring a valid passport or identity card.

License pickup

You pick up your driver's license in person at the municipality. Bring your old driver's license with you.

How long does it take?

You will receive an email as soon as the driver's license can be picked up, this can take up to 5 business days. If you made an urgent application before 3 p.m., you can pick up your driver's license within 2 business days.

CAUTION:

You must pick up your driver's license within 3 months of application. If you do not pick up your driver's license within 3 months, you will be responsible for the cost of a new driver's license request.
