Environmental regulations for businesses

An entrepreneur needs an (environmental) permit in some cases, but often a notification will suffice. Which companies need an environmental permit is regulated by the Activities Decree. This divides businesses into three categories:

  • Category A; (e.g. offices, playgroups) are not subject to permits. These businesses must comply with general environmental regulations, but do not have to report to the municipality.
  • Companies in category B; (metal or woodworking, printing, hospitality, etc.). These are the majority of businesses. They must report their activities. The notification goes nationwide through the Activities Internet Module (AIM), which notifies the municipality. They must also comply with general environmental regulations.
  • Companies in category C; (hospitals, large farms and other companies that cause environmental damage. They need an environmental permit. You can apply for this through the Omgevingsloket
