Security Policy

Safety

Safety is a basic condition for living, working or staying somewhere nice and pleasant. Our ambition is that the inhabitants of our municipality feel comfortable and safe in their own living environment. We work together with our residents and partners to create a safe Geldrop-Mierlo in which nuisance and crime are kept to a minimum. Geldrop-Mierlo should not only be safe, people should also feel safe, welcome and free. But also when safety goes wrong, the municipality is well prepared. To this end, the municipality cooperates with the police and the Safety Region (including the fire department and GHOR (Medical Assistance at Accidents and Disasters)) and disaster relief is handled professionally.

Integral Security Policy

The municipality conducts an integrated safety policy to ensure that safety is as good as possible. We work together with both internal and external partners to see how best to address identified safety problems. The municipality is the director. It combines the various initiatives into one coordinated and streamlined approach.

Every 4 years, security policy goes through a cycle. At the national, regional and local levels, we draw up plans that provide the framework for addressing security.

Integral Security Plan (IVP) 2023-2026

On April 3, 2023, the City Council adopted the Integral Security Plan. This integral security plan identifies three priorities for our municipality:

  • Health and Safety: We want everyone in Geldrop-Mierlo to be and feel safe. We are responsible for all residents. We assume the own strength of residents, but there is also a group of residents who cannot manage on their own because society is becoming increasingly complex. This brings with it risks both in the area of Health and safety.
  • Digital security: Society is digitizing at a rapid pace. Increasingly, residents, business owners and public institutions arrange their affairs and services online. The online world offers many possibilities and opportunities, but there are also security risks such as the rise of digital crime.
  • Undermining: The concept of undermining is now impossible to ignore in society where it is both visible and invisible. It is a serious social problem that creates insecurity and nuisance and is often accompanied by oppression and violence.

In addition to a description, each priority outlines our ambitions and what we will do to achieve them. The priorities are listed in no particular order.

In addition, youth and safety is a common thread in all priorities. Most young people are doing well. To keep it that way, we put youth at the center. In all priorities, youth appear as specific target groups and approaches.

Results safety monitor 2023 Geldrop-Mierlo

In the fall of 2023, 1,157 residents from our municipality participated in the so-called national Safety Monitor, which is conducted in our municipality every 2 years. These residents were asked in a survey about their opinions on the liveability, living environment, social cohesion and safety of the municipality and their own neighborhood/neighborhood.
These results were supplemented with figures on the number of reports and reports of nuisances and incidents to the police. In addition to a comparison between the various neighborhoods of our municipality, our municipality is also compared with regional municipalities.

Conclusion: on average, our residents give the same rating for safety in 2023 as in 2021: a 7.6. The feeling of safety has increased slightly.
The average report grade for livability has decreased slightly: from a 7.7 in 2021 to a 7.6 in 2023. In 2023 less nuisance is experienced than in 2021, cohesion and connectedness among residents and satisfaction with physical facilities has remained almost the same.

Security and livability ratings and social cohesion scale score

Safety

Key results from the 2023 Safety Monitor are included in an infographic. This report shows that the residents of our municipality rate safety in the residential environment with an average rating of 7.6. This has not changed from 2 years ago. In the Akert and Coevering the ratings have decreased in recent years, the highest ratings are given in Zesgehuchten, Genoenhuis/Gijzenrooi and Mierlo.

On average, our residents do feel safer in 2023 than in 2021. For example, 85% of residents do not feel unsafe in their own neighborhoods.

Livability

Residents give an average grade of 7.6 to the livability in their neighborhoods. It is a figure for how pleasant people live in their own neighborhood; in 2021 it was a 7.7. The highest marks in both measurements were given in Zesgehuchten, Genoenhuis/Gijzenrooi and Skandia.

The inhabitants of Coevering and Braakhuizen-Zuid give the lowest report marks for liveability, the lowest mark is a 6.8 in 2023 in Coevering. We see a decrease in the report mark liveability in center-Geldrop, Coevering and Akert in 2023 compared to 2021, in these neighborhoods the share of people who indicate that the neighborhood has deteriorated is also relatively large.

Social cohesion

The degree of cohesion and connectedness between residents in the neighborhood was also portrayed using a so-called scale score of social cohesion. This scale score remained the same in the entire municipality in 2023 compared to 2021. The neighborhoods Zesgehuchten and Skandia score the highest in both measurements, in addition Genoenhuis/Gijzenrooi and Mierlo also score higher than average. In Coevering and Braakhuizen-Zuid the score for social cohesion is lowest. In Coevering and Skandia, the score decreased the most between 2021 and 2023.

In general, in the neighborhoods where livability and safety are rated lower, interconnectedness among residents is also lower.

Physical facilities

In order to visualize residents' satisfaction with physical facilities, a so-called scale score for physical facilities has been developed. This scale score remained almost the same in the entire municipality in 2023 compared to 2021. The districts Genoenhuis/Gijzenrooi and Zesgehuchten score the highest in both measurements, in 2021 the center of Geldrop scored the lowest, in 2023 the Coevering is the only scoring district as far as physical facilities are concerned. The difference between the two measurements is greatest in Akert (decrease of 0.6% point).

Satisfaction with functioning of municipality and police

One third (33%) of Geldrop-Mierlo residents are (very) satisfied with the functioning of the police in the neighborhood, this is about the same as in 2021. Between the areas, the share of (very) satisfied residents varies from 27% in Mierlo to 44% in Akert.

A slight decrease is visible in the residents' satisfaction with the municipal approach to liveability and safety in the residential neighborhood (43% are (very) satisfied in 2023, in 2021 47%). The share of satisfied residents is highest in Centrum-Geldrop, Genoenhuis/Gijzenrooi and Skandia. The group of residents dissatisfied with the approach of the municipality is largest in Akert (22%) and Coevering (22%).

Top 5 problems to be addressed

In the infographic, all results are also described per neighborhood and a top 5 of problems that residents of that neighborhood believe need to be addressed follows. As in all previous Safety Monitors, the minor annoyances (enforcement) are mainly in this top. The top 5 problems in the entire municipality are:
