Becoming a Dutch citizen through naturalization
What is it?
You can apply for Dutch nationality in two ways: by naturalization or option. Because option is easier, we first see if you qualify for it. If not, we will proceed with naturalization. Naturalization means obtaining the Dutch nationality.
How does it work?
You apply for Dutch citizenship by calling us.
We will then find out if you meet all the Requirements . We will call you back about this as soon as possible, but this may take a few days. If you meet the Requirements , we will make an appointment to submit the application. At that time, you must also pay the fees. We will forward your application to the IND. Once it has been reviewed you will receive a letter with the decision and possibly an invitation to the naturalization ceremony.
An option request is handled by the municipality itself. Again, we first find out if you meet the Requirements , and if so, we make an appointment with you.
Requirements Apply for Dutch nationality
- You are of age.
- You have a residence permit. Or you are from one of these European countries.
- You have not had a sentence for a crime in the past 5 years.
- You meet the Requirements for Option or the Requirements for Naturalization.
Dutch nationality and recognition of child
Are you applying for your child and want to acknowledge the child? For this, the Requirements include:
- At the time of application, your child is living in the Netherlands.
- Your child has a residence permit.
- Do you recognize the child before the age of seven? The child automatically receives the Dutch nationality.
- Do you acknowledge the child after age 7? You must prove your biological parentage within 1 year. You provide this proof with a DNA test. Do you have no DNA evidence? And do you still want the child to receive Dutch nationality? Then you can register the child for the option procedure. You must have raised the child for at least 3 years.
- Is your child 16 or 17 years old? If so, your child must have lived continuously and legally in the Netherlands for at least 3 years prior to the application.
What does it cost?

Dutch nationality and recognition of child
Acknowledging your child does not cost you anything. However, do consider costs for a transcript or excerpt (you pay this at the time of application) and the cost of DNA testing.
What do I need?
- your residence permit
- your valid passport
- your birth certificate
- the integration diploma (or equivalent)
If you are married or registered partner or you live with a Dutch partner, you must prove this with one of the following documents:
- marriage certificate
- certificate of registered partnership
- proof that you have lived together with a Dutch partner for 3 years or more
Note!
- The municipality must be able to see that foreign documents are genuine. This can be done by legalizing the documents. Ask the municipality in advance if this is necessary.
- Foreign documents must be in Dutch, English, French or German. If they are not, first have the documents translated by a translator who is sworn in the Netherlands.
Dutch nationality and recognition of child
If you wish to acknowledge your child and apply for Dutch citizenship for your child, please include:
- A valid ID from both parents
- written consent of the biological mother if the child is under 16 years of age
- written consent from the child himself or herself if the child is 12 years of age or older
- DNA test results, if the child is over 7 years old
How long does it take?
In the case of an option request, the municipality decides. The municipality decides within 13 weeks of receiving your application. The municipality may extend this period once.
For a naturalization request, the Immigration and Naturalization Service (IND) decides. A maximum of 1 year is required for the assessment and approval of your request.
