Dealing with an overloaded power grid

The Netherlands aims to use only renewable energy by 2050. To achieve this, the power grid must be expanded and upgraded. Additional cables, pipelines, and energy storage facilities are needed. In Geldrop-Mierlo, too, the current power grid is not robust enough to meet the growing demand for renewable energy. That is why various projects will be carried out in the coming years. We call this the energy transition.

In addition, the power grid is becoming increasingly congested. We’re using more electricity due to factors such as electric vehicles and gas-free home heating. Many people also use electricity at the same time. This causes the power grid to become overloaded. This problem is called grid congestion.

Neighborhood approach Enexis

In collaboration with a contractor, Enexis is carrying out work on the power grid in the neighborhoods. We are responsible for obtaining the necessary permits and securing space for additional electrical cabinets and cables.

Network congestion: implications for Geldrop-Mierlo

Starting July 1, 2026, Enexis will no longer be able to provide any new connections to the power grid in Mierlo. This means that new homes, schools, healthcare facilities, etc., can no longer be connected, and the continued growth of the business community will be put under pressure. Furthermore, upgrading an existing connection—sometimes necessary for a heat pump or charging station—will no longer be possible in these areas.

Local Energy System Pilot

The energy transition is reaching clear limits. The current energy system is becoming increasingly ill-suited to sustainably generated local energy, such as solar power. Simply expanding the power grid is not enough. That costs a lot of money and does not offer a lasting solution. The Mayor and Aldermen therefore want to investigate whether Geldrop-Mierlo can become a pilot municipality for a local energy system.
