Dealing with an overloaded power grid

Neighborhood approach Enexis

In cooperation with a contractor, Enexis is carrying out work on the energy network in the neighborhoods. In doing so, the municipality is responsible for the necessary permits and space for additional power houses and cables.

According to the current schedule, this approach will begin in Geldrop-Mierlo in 2027, starting with the outskirts of Mierlo. The center of Geldrop and Zesgehuchten will follow in 2029. However, this does not mean that no further activities will be carried out in the rest of our municipality.

There will always be ad hoc projects when needed. In addition, schedules may be affected by neighborhoods becoming more sustainable faster or slower than expected or by time delays in obtaining the necessary permits, the purchase of land for power houses, or unforeseen circumstances such as extreme weather. Before Enexis begins work in a neighborhood, you will always receive a letter from Enexis with the schedule and an explanation of the work.

Reinforcement 150kV connection Eindhoven-Oost - Maarheeze

A new underground 150 kV high-voltage connection is being constructed between the high-voltage substations Eindhoven-Oost and Maarheeze. This is necessary to guarantee the reliability and security of supply of electricity in the region.

The increase in electricity consumption, such as the charging of electric cars, and the growing feed-in of energy from wind and solar farms, requires expansion of the network. The current 150 kV grid in the region has insufficient capacity to accommodate these developments. TenneT is therefore working on a solution to this bottleneck.

Various route alternatives are currently being investigated for this underground connection. The location has therefore yet to be determined. The connection will be approximately 22 to 30 kilometers long and consist of a circuit of three cables, which will be laid at a depth of at least 1.20 meters. This will be done by means of open excavation and/or drilling.

In recent months, the route alternatives have been further analyzed. This involved looking at the challenges involved in laying the cables in this area. Based on this analysis, the four corridors have been modified in some locations. Within each corridor, a possible alternative approximately 140 meters wide was identified. These alternatives can be viewed in the project viewer at the bottom of Tennet's project page.

Maasbracht - Eindhoven grid expansion

To further strengthen the electricity grid, a new overhead 380 kV high-voltage connection between Maasbracht and Eindhoven is being prepared. This expansion not only supports the energy transition in the southern Netherlands, but also strengthens the international power exchange with Belgium and Germany. Thus, security of supply is guaranteed, both nationally and internationally.

This project is being implemented by TenneT in cooperation with the Ministry of Climate and Green Growth. On the website of RVO (Rijksdienst voor Ondernemend Nederland) extensive information is available about the project procedure and the different phases the project goes through, from exploration to realization. We are currently in the exploration phase, in which various route alternatives are being examined. An environmental impact assessment will then be prepared and a preferred alternative selected. Realization will begin after approval of the final project decision. The expected completion of the new high-voltage connection is scheduled for 2035.
