Bus lane Mierloseweg

We plan to build a bus lane on Mierloseweg, between Grote Bosweg and Spoelstraat. The preliminary design was available for public inspection from Friday, January 10 through Thursday, February 20, 2025.

The Board of Mayor and Aldermen used the comments received to establish a final design (DO) for the proposed bus lane. The following notes outline the design.

Reason

Due to congestion on the Mierlo road, public transportation is experiencing delays resulting in unreliable schedules. Regional and municipal policy is precisely aimed at achieving a structural improvement in public transport. By constructing a bus lane from Grote Bosweg to the intersection with Dwarsstraat/Spoelstraat, the bus can pass the queue with considerably less time loss. With a smooth flow and a more reliable timetable, public transportation can better compete with cars. This increases the number of bus passengers with which we keep the region more accessible.

A mobility transition to more public transportation is included in the regional mobility vision and is also anchored in the Local Accessibility Agenda. In the Regional Accessibility Agreement, the mobility vision is further elaborated in concrete projects including the construction of a bus lane on the Mierloseweg.

Bus lane

We will realize a bus lane on the Mierloseweg between the junction with the Grote Bosweg and the intersection with the Spoelstraat, with a length of approximately 425m, in the direction of Geldrop. The bus lane to be constructed will connect directly to the right-turn lane at the intersection with the Mierloseweg/Spoelstraat. The bus will drive via this presorted section and merge with the other traffic immediately after the stop line of this traffic control installation, allowing the entire queue to be passed. Such an application was previously realized at the intersections Gijzenrooiseweg/Schaarland and Eindhovenseweg/Hooge Akker. This solution has a more favorable space requirement than a separate bus lane up to the stop line and can only be applied if the amount of right-turning car traffic is relatively small. Thus, there is sufficient space to realize a single bus lane within the available traffic space. Thus the chicane (halfway between Grote Bosweg and the traffic light) is eliminated and part of the bike path is shifted 0.93m northward. We can nevertheless realize the entire modification on municipal land.

Roadway Mierloseweg

In this project, the top layer of the adjacent roadway for car traffic will be replaced with a noise-reducing asphalt. Acoustic research shows that the noise at the residences along the bus lane to be constructed will decrease by approximately 1 dB compared to the current situation due to the application of a quieter road surface. For the sake of completeness we refer to the attached acoustic study, carried out by RHDHV.

Green

Construction of the bus lane requires the removal of six trees. These are now of a limited size or are in oppression of other trees. The streetscape will not change significantly as a result.

Traffic control installation

The 2005 traffic control installation is being replaced and upgraded. After 20 years, an installation is at the end of its service life.

Planning

Construction of the Mierloseweg bus lane is expected to begin in the fall of 2025. For further information, please contact Philip Wouters of the Space Department by calling 040-2893893.
