Join the conversation in the square! Gildeplein is getting more greenery, shade, and space for people to gather
Gildeplein in Geldrop is set to get a greener and more attractive redesign. With a new conceptual design, the municipality of Geldrop-Mierlo aims to transform the square into a pleasant gathering place where residents can spend time, meet one another, and cool off on hot days.
Join the conversation in the square!
Before the preliminary design is further developed, the municipality would like to hear what residents think of the plans. That is why it is organizing adrop-in session on Wednesday, July 1, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.at Gildeplein. Visitors can view the design, ask questions, and share ideas or concerns with the municipal staff members present. No registration is required; residents can drop by whenever it’s convenient for them.
Important connection
The square serves as an important link between the Overburght neighborhood, the town center, the Anna Hospital, and the train station. Research shows that the area currently offers little shade, has hardly any seating, and features a relatively high proportion of paved surfaces. Furthermore, Gildeplein is located in a part of Geldrop where residents live more than 400 meters from a so-called “cool spot.”
Focus on Greening
That is why the municipality has opted for a design that focuses on greening. Large native trees will be planted in the square, which will eventually provide shade and cool the area. In addition, new planting beds with a variety of plants will be added, enhancing biodiversity and giving the square a greener appearance.
Socializing, Peace, and Relaxation
The quality of the visitor experience will also be improved. Various seating areas will be added, both for socializing and for rest and relaxation. The seating will be arranged so that visitors can keep an eye on the square and the historic Guild Monument. The monument will also retain sufficient space for activities organized by the shooting guild and other events.
History of the Location
The design explicitly takes the site’s history into account. Gildeplein is located next to the Fabrikantenhuis, a national historic landmark that commemorates Geldrop’s textile heritage. The existing information signs and the Gilde Monument therefore remain important features of the square.
With this redesign, the municipality aims not only to address climate change and heat stress, but also to create a place where residents enjoy spending time. The new Gildeplein is intended to become a green gathering place that fits in with the historic and urban surroundings of Geldrop.
