Study Confirms Residents' Concerns About Traffic Safety on Eindhovenseweg
Traffic safety along the Eindhovenseweg–Nieuwendijk–Mierloseweg route needs to be improved. This is evident from an independent study by De Baan Verkeersadvies, commissioned by the municipality of Geldrop-Mierlo. The study shows that there are traffic bottlenecks at several locations that require corrective measures.
The investigation was prompted, among other things, by reports from residents, a petition that was submitted, the efforts of a residents’ group, and a serious traffic accident at the intersection of Eindhovenseweg and Hulsterweg in 2025. The city council subsequently requested an independent investigation into traffic safety on this route.
Road Safety Challenges
De Baan Verkeersadvies analyzed recorded traffic accidents from 2014 through 2025 and conducted several on-site inspections. Based on this, the firm concluded that there are traffic safety bottlenecks at various locations. The report includes recommendations to improve safety within the road’s current function as a local access road with a speed limit of 50 kilometers per hour.
Temporary traffic measure
The municipality has implemented a temporary traffic measure on Eindhovenseweg to improve traffic safety in the short term. This concerns the intersection of Eindhovenseweg and Hulsterweg, where the left-turn lane toward Hulsterweg has been closed off with movable barriers. This forces drivers in the area to slow down. The effects of this temporary measure will be monitored in the coming period.
Second study: possible 30 km/h traffic configuration
In addition to the traffic safety study, Haskoning Nederland also conducted a second study on the possibility of designating (parts of) the route as a 30 km/h zone. A preliminary assessment indicates that such a speed reduction could have significant consequences for traffic flow, accessibility to surrounding neighborhoods and amenities, public transportation, freight traffic, and the operational readiness of emergency services. Therefore, additional research is needed before decisions can be made on this matter.
Road Safety First
“Road safety is our top priority, without exception. The road safety study conducted by De Baan Verkeersadvies is clear on this point and confirms that there are bottlenecks on this route that require action. We take this seriously. At the same time, we must be realistic: we cannot eliminate every traffic risk. A safe traffic environment depends not only on the road’s design but also on the behavior of road users. What we can do is design the road to be as safe as possible and implement measures that contribute to a safer traffic environment. “After the summer, we will engage in discussions with stakeholders to carefully explore various options for improving traffic safety on Eindhovenseweg and assess them for feasibility, effectiveness, and practicality,” explains Alderman Meulendijk.
Further research
She continues: “The initial findings of the second study currently raise more questions than they answer. The preliminary results of Haskoning’s study show that designating (parts of) the route as a 30 km/h zone could have significant consequences for the surrounding area and traffic flow. At the same time, traffic safety involves more than just speed. Designating a 30 km/h zone therefore does not automatically lead to a safer situation. Additional research is needed to properly assess which measures actually contribute to traffic safety.”
