The Municipality of Geldrop-Mierlo, Rialto Real Estate Development, and Whoon have finalized the purchase of the Nettorama building

On Tuesday, March 31, the municipality of Geldrop-Mierlo and developers Rialto and Whoon signed the purchase agreement for the Nettorama property, which consists of a supermarket, retail stores, and 18 apartments. With this purchase, the municipality is taking an important step toward the redevelopment of the area surrounding Marktplein. The building will eventually be demolished to make way for a future-proof and attractive downtown area. The focus will be on developing new apartments and strengthening the downtown as both a shopping and residential area. The purchase of the Nettorama building is a key prerequisite for getting this area development underway. Tenants of apartments or retail spaces in the Nettorama building have already been informed.

Alderman Gestel:

“With the purchase of the Nettorama building, we’ve secured a key position that will enable us to realize our ambitions. These include building new apartments, enhancing the downtown area, and improving the retail landscape. In the coming period, we’ll be working full steam ahead with our development partners to further flesh out these plans.”

Rob de Jong (Director of Project Development at Whoon)

“This acquisition is accelerating the redevelopment of Marktplein. Together with the municipality and Rialto, we are creating space for new homes and strengthening the heart of Geldrop-Mierlo as a place to live, shop, and socialize.”

Rico van den Eijnde (Director of Rialto Real Estate Development)

“With this purchase, the municipality is taking the lead in the redevelopment of Marktplein. It lays the foundation for a comprehensive and future-proof vision for the center of Geldrop-Mierlo. Together with the municipality and Whoon, we are working to create a vibrant center where shopping, living, and socializing come together.”

Letter of Intent

The municipality of Geldrop-Mierlo, Rialto, and Whoon signed a letter of intent late last year with the aim of developing a comprehensive plan for Marktplein. This study also takes into account the Albert Heijn locations on Eindhovenseweg and the site of the former post office. For example, it is being examined whether a supermarket could eventually be housed at the site of the former post office. The study is also examining whether the Albert Heijn locations on Marktplein and on Eindhovenseweg could be consolidated into a single large Albert Heijn supermarket in the town center. In addition to the supermarkets, the study also covers new commercial and community spaces, a health center, and approximately 200 residential units.

The agreement also stipulates that Rialto and Whoon are authorized to redevelop the post office site. The exact details of this are still being determined as part of the ongoing study.

Over the coming months, the parties involved will further develop the plan. It will then be submitted for approval to the city council and the developers’ management teams. This will be followed by the necessary planning procedures. Local residents and other stakeholders will be actively involved in this process.
