Geldrop-Mierlo is investing in accessibility and safety through the A67 package of measures
Together with regional partners and the national government, we aim to improve accessibility, traffic safety, and quality of life along the A67. To this end, the A67 Action Plan has been developed, which includes three bicycle projects within the municipality.
The package of measures was drawn up after the MIRT project A67 Leenderheide–Geldrop was put on hold in 2022. To enable improvements in the meantime, the national government made a remaining budget of €20.7 million available. In early 2026, the region submitted an application for these funds to the national government. It is not yet known whether these funds will be granted.
Focus on smart and sustainable solutions
Based on an analysis of bottlenecks in the underlying road network, various measures have been developed. These measures are aimed at improving traffic flow, enhancing road safety, and promoting sustainable mobility, such as cycling.
For Geldrop-Mierlo, the following projects are involved:
- Improving bicycle safety at the on- and off-ramps of the A67 (Exit 34);
- The construction and improvement of the high-speed bike route between the High Tech Campus Eindhoven and Geldrop;
- Improving the regional bicycle route between Eindhoven, Geldrop-Mierlo, and Helmond.
Investing with an eye toward the future
These projects not only help resolve current traffic bottlenecks but will also remain valuable even after a potential future widening of the A67. This makes them so-called “no-regret” measures.
The total costs will be shared by the national government and the municipalities involved, with the national government’s contribution capped at 50 percent. For Geldrop-Mierlo, this currently involves an investment of approximately €860,000, excluding a contribution—to be determined at a later date—for the regional bicycle connection between Eindhoven, Geldrop-Mierlo, and Helmond. The municipality expects that, in the run-up to the 2027 budget and beyond, the municipal council will be asked to set aside funds for these projects.
Working Together to Make the Region More Accessible
Through the A67 Action Plan, six municipalities in Southeast Brabant and the national government are jointly taking responsibility for keeping the region accessible and livable. These investments contribute to a strong and future-proof Brainport region. Alderman van de Laar: “We face clear choices when it comes to accessibility and livability. With this package of measures, we are explicitly opting for smart, future-oriented solutions that have an immediate impact on our residents. At the same time, it is important to emphasize that we are still at the beginning of the process and that decision-making and financing are yet to follow. But by investing in high-quality bicycle connections, we reduce the pressure on the road network and improve traffic safety. We are seizing this opportunity to bring national funds to our municipality. In this way, we are building a strong and accessible region step by step.”
