Children take on textile waste during the Textile Race
Ten elementary schools in the municipalities of Eindhoven, Geldrop-Mierlo, and Valkenswaard will spend four weeks tackling the issue of used and damaged textiles. That is what the Textile Race is all about. This educational project, in which schools take on the challenge of textile waste, combines raising awareness about circularity with a period of action. In this way, children and their communities learn about reusing, repairing, and collecting used and damaged textiles. The Textile Race aims to make reusing, repairing, and recycling textile waste fun, educational, and easy!
Textile Race Kicks Off
In Geldrop-Mierlo, students from the Vijfblad Child Center have kicked off this challenge. Alderman van de Laar gave the starting signal last week. He encouraged the children. “Over the next four weeks, you and the other schools will be competing to make the most of used and damaged textiles. You’ll do this by reusing, repairing, or collecting as much used and damaged textiles as possible for recycling starting May 19. He wished the students the very best of luck. “It would, of course, be wonderful if you could once again demonstrate that our municipality knows how to collect textiles and that we can once again finish the Textile Race as winners. But simply participating is, of course, already very special and truly important. After all, a better world starts in your own closet and those of your family and friends. So spread the word!”
Informative
During the race, children learn about topics such as reducing consumption, the impact of textile production on people and the environment, repair, reuse, and recycling in an educational and interactive way. After a guest lecture given by passionate experts, the students are ready to actually do their part for the circular economy. They do this by reusing, repairing, or collecting as many used and damaged textiles as possible for recycling in the weeks that follow. Local residents can help the children, too! Local residents can donate their textiles at www.textielrace.nl. Students will then come to their homes to pick up the textiles.
A better world, starts in your closet
We can do much better when it comes to reusing, repairing, and recycling textiles! Every year, each person in the Netherlands throws away ten kilograms of textiles in the general waste bin, where they are incinerated. Or textiles sit in our closets for years without ever being used. What a waste! Because our textiles can often still be reused or repaired very effectively. Moreover, textiles that are collected in recycling bins often become contaminated because people also throw dirty and wet textiles into the bins. That’s why the Textile Race raises awareness among children and their communities about the importance of reusing, repairing, and recycling textiles!
The Textile Race in Eindhoven, Geldrop-Mierlo, and Valkenswaard will take place from May 18 to June 11. The race is an initiative in collaboration with the municipalities of Eindhoven, Valkenswaard, and Geldrop-Mierlo, as well as the thrift stores Het Goed and Verderest. They ensure that the collected textiles are sent to reputable recyclers. This way, all textiles are put to good use and can be reused or recycled.
