Pupil Transport

For many students with disabilities, traveling to school on their own is not always possible. Sometimes the distance is too great, public transportation is not an option, or a student needs extra assistance. In these situations, the municipality can help with student transportation. Together with the transportation provider, we ensure that students are transported to and from school safely and appropriately.

This page provides a clear overview of all the information you need. You can read about how school transportation works, when your child may be eligible, and where to go if you have questions.

Effective school transportation requires cooperation between parents, schools, the municipality, and the transportation provider.

Do you have any questions? Please contact the municipality.

Frequently Asked Questions

Would you like to know more about wait times, support, or the review of an application? Check out the frequently asked questions.

How does school transportation work?

The municipality determines the most appropriate form of transportation for each student. In doing so, we consider factors such as the distance to school, the student’s level of independence, and any disabilities. In some cases, reimbursement for private or public transportation is sufficient. In other cases, specialized transportation is provided. This service is operated by Bergerhof.

When is my child eligible?

The municipality reviews each application individually. In doing so, we consider factors such as:

  • the distance between home and school;
  • travel time;
  • your child's ability to travel independently;
  • the nearest accessible school.

We are also looking into whether it is possible to travel by bicycle, public transportation, or with an escort.

What does the municipality mean by “the nearest accessible school”?

That is the school that:

  • provides the right education and necessary support for your child;
  • and is closest to your home.

If you choose a school that is farther away, this does not automatically mean that you are entitled to transportation to that school.

What if the nearest school can't accommodate my child?

In that case, we ask that you provide proof of this. For example, you can submit a letter or email from the school explaining why your child cannot be admitted or why the necessary support cannot be provided.

How do I apply for school transportation?

You can submit an application using the online form. During the application process, we will ask for information regarding:

  • your child;
  • the school;
  • the travel distance;
  • any medical or practical limitations.

Once received, the municipality will review your application.

How long will it take to receive a response?

Once we have received your application, we will send you a notification (either by mail or via email). If you have not received this (or any other response) from us, your application has likely not been received. In that case, please contact us one week after submitting your application. The municipality strives to process applications as quickly as possible. Please allow for a few weeks of processing time, especially just before the start of a new school year.

When should I apply for school transportation for the new school year?

You can submit an application starting in April. Please make sure to submit your completed application form by June 1. If you meet this deadline, we will be able to review your application in time for the start of the new school year. If you apply after June 1, there is a chance that you will not know before the start of the school year whether your child is eligible for funding, or what type of funding they may receive.

What types of school transportation are available?

The municipality can utilize various modes of transportation:

  • a public transportation allowance;
  • a mileage allowance if you drive your child to school yourself;
  • specialized transportation by taxi or bus.

The municipality always opts for the most appropriate and independent solution.

Can my child travel on their own?

Yes, whenever possible, we encourage independence. Sometimes, with guidance, a student can learn to get around by bike or public transportation. We work together to determine what is feasible and safe.

Can a companion ride along in the taxi?

In some situations, assistance may be necessary. The municipality will assess this on a case-by-case basis. Please contact us if you need assistance.

What happens if my child is sick or can't come?

Please notify the transportation provider and the school as soon as possible. This will help us avoid unnecessary trips and wait times.

What should I do if there are changes?

Has there been a change in your child’s situation? For example:

  • a move;
  • another school;
  • changed school hours;
  • a revised schedule;
  • a change in the health situation.

Please notify the municipality and the transportation provider as soon as possible.

My child has to wait a long time for transportation. What can I do?

With combined transportation, students may have to wait or routes may change. If you have any questions or are experiencing problems, please contact Munckhof or the municipality. Together, we will see if a suitable solution can be found.

What happens if a passenger misbehaves in the taxi?

Transportation safety is important for all students and drivers. If a student’s behavior causes recurring problems, the transportation provider will discuss the matter with the parents. We expect parents to guide their child and address any behavioral issues. Sometimes, additional support may be needed. If the situation does not improve, the special transportation service may ultimately be discontinued. In that case, we will work together to explore other transportation options.

Can I appeal a decision?

Yes. If you disagree with a decision made by the municipality, you can file an objection. The letter containing the decision explains how to do this and the deadline for doing so.

Where can I go with questions?

Do you have questions about school transportation, your application, or an existing service? Please contact the municipality of Geldrop-Mierlo or the transportation provider Munckhof for questions about the routes.

What should I do if my situation has changed?

If your child’s situation changes (moving, changing schools, or changing location), you must also notify us or submit a request. If possible, please do so at least 8 weeks before the change takes effect. This ensures that we can process your request or update in time. Do you have any questions? Please send an email toleerlingenvervoer@geldrop-mierlo.nl. We’ll let you know if we need any additional information from you.
