Order of power connections for residential construction established
The Municipal Executive of Geldrop-Mierlo adopted the final priority list for electricity connections in housing projects on September 28, 2026. As of October 1, 2026, the list is available to grid operator Enexis.
Why a ranking list?
The power grid is at capacity, and transmission capacity is scarce. Starting July 1, 2026, nationwide rules issued by the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) will apply to the allocation of newly available capacity. Public services such as hospitals, drinking water utilities, and fire stations will be given priority. Next in line are, among others, residential construction, schools, and heating projects.
Starting Position
Through the priority list (divided into a list for Geldrop and a list for Mierlo), Geldrop-Mierlo aims to give all housing projects and schools in our municipality a clear starting point as soon as transmission capacity becomes available at Enexis. In this way, we ensure that housing construction and economic development can continue as much as possible.
Incidentally, this list does not imply that the project has received spatial approval. Every plan goes through the usual procedures, whereby local residents are informed at the appropriate time and, where applicable, can have their say.
How was the list compiled?
Developers could register their project up to and including September 1, 2026.
The municipality assessed all applications based on previously established policy rules. In the event of a tie, a notary determined the order by drawing lots.
The draft lists were published on September 11; objections could be submitted up to and including September 21. After processing the objections, the final list was adopted.
There are two separate lists, one for each congestion area: Geldrop and Mierlo . The lists include over 1,700 homes in over 40 projects in Geldrop and nearly 1,500 homes in just under 30 projects in Mierlo.
Being on the list does not automatically mean power will be supplied. That depends on the capacity at Enexis.
Mierlo: 'extremely critical'
Mierlo is located in a different catchment area than Geldrop. Enexis classifies that area as 'extremely critical'. Parts of housing projects in Deurne, Asten, Someren, and Helmond are also located in this area. Those projects are also being submitted to Enexis. Because it is now clear that the situation in this catchment area is extremely critical, it is expected that there will be a waiting list for electricity here. After the projects have been submitted, it will become clear whether electricity might still be available somewhere, or what position the housing locations hold on the waiting list. This will be known by the end of the year.
Geldrop: more perspective
In Geldrop, more electricity appears to be available. Clarity on this is also expected by the end of 2026.
How to proceed?
Alderman Bijl expects clarity by the end of this year regarding which projects will receive power. In the meantime, the municipality is investigating smart solutions, such as building without a fixed power connection.
