UPDATE: Efforts to combat the Asian tiger mosquito in Mierlo will continue
Another Asian tiger mosquito has been found in Mierlo. As a result, the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) is expanding the area in which the tiger mosquito was found. If the Asian tiger mosquito establishes itself in large numbers, it can transmit tropical diseases. That is why it is important to prevent the mosquito from spreading further.
The NVWA has already begun its control efforts and will continue them until the end of the mosquito season, which is expected to be in October or November 2026. Staff members are searching for areas with standing water where mosquitoes can breed. Where possible, this water is removed. If that is not possible, the water is treated with a substance that kills mosquito larvae. This substance is harmless to humans and other animals. Mosquito traps are also being set up at various locations to monitor whether the control measures are effective.
Do you think you’ve found an Asian tiger mosquito? If so, please keep the mosquito and report your finding via the NVWA website. Do you have general questions about control measures?
