Geldrop-Mierlo receives Dementia-Friendly Municipality certificate
On Wednesday, October 28, our municipality will officially receive the Dementia-Friendly Municipality certificate from Alzheimer Netherlands. This is an important milestone for the municipality, which, together with residents, organizations, and associations, is committed to a society in which people with dementia can continue to participate for as long as possible. The festive presentation will take place at De Weeffabriek, with humanitarian innovator, filmmaker, and bestselling author Teun Toebes as a special guest.
More and more people with dementia
Alderman Mathil Sanders is proud of the recognition. According to the Alderman A dementia-friendly municipality begins with recognition and understanding. “We are working with various programs to create more opportunities for people with dementia and to support informal caregivers. It starts with all of us: recognizing dementia, knowing how to deal with it, and above all, continuing to look at what someone can still do.”
Teun Toebes: looking at what is still possible
During the festive evening, Teun Toebes talks about his experiences in the Health and about his unique perspective on life with dementia. He shows that people with dementia can do and mean much more than is sometimes thought. After his story, he engages in a conversation with Alderman Mathil Sanders.
Residents of Geldrop-Mierlo will also be given a platform. They will share personal experiences regarding sports, swimming, and caring for someone with dementia. This demonstrates how important it is for people with dementia to remain part of everyday life. Naturally, there will be an opportunity to ask questions. Everyone is welcome.
