Child Care and Social Medical Indication (SMI)

Sometimes a family finds itself in a difficult situation—for example, due to mental health issues, stress, illness, or other concerns. Childcare can then help provide some temporary relief. 

Are you not eligible for the child care allowance from the IRS? If so, you may be eligible for financial assistance from the municipality. This is possible with a Social Medical Indication (SMI). 

With an SMI, the municipality covers (part of) the cost of child care. This gives you the time and space to address your situation and find an alternative solution. Child care may also be necessary (temporarily) for your child’s development. 

When are you eligible for a Social Medical Indication? 

  • Your child(ren) in the family are between the ages of 0 and 12;   
  • You have a documented physical, sensory, intellectual, or mental disability
  • You live in the municipality of Geldrop-Mierlo;
  • You are not eligible for the child care allowance from the Internal Revenue Service;
  • There is no one in your area who can look after your child(ren);
  • You cannot use any other suitable facility.

  1. Please verify that you meet the Requirements .
  2. Fill out the SMI application form; to do so, you must log in with your DigiD. Don't have a DigiD?

What documents do you need to submit the application?

  • A quote/contract for childcare specifying the total number of hours, hourly rate, and total monthly cost
  • Information regarding your and/or your partner’s aggregate income (pay stubs or benefit statements for the past 3 months)
  • Denial of the right to child care allowance (applied for through the Tax and Customs Administration) 

What happens after your application? 

  • The municipality will assess your situation. This is done based on a personal interview and the information you provide.
  • You will receive a written decision within 8 weeks of submitting your application. We recommend that you wait to enroll your child in childcare until you have received our decision. Without a valid decision, you are not entitled to a subsidy from the municipality.

Communicating change

Are you already receiving a subsidy, or have you applied for one? And has there been a change in your financial situation or in your childcare arrangements? If so, please notify your SMI account manager immediately. This also applies to changes in your partner’s situation. 

Please notify us of the following changes: 

  • There is a change in the scope of child care;
  • You want to stop receiving the child care subsidy;
  • Your income has changed;
  • You are moving outside the municipality of Geldrop-Mierlo.
