Beethoven grant gives a boost to the construction of 160 homes in De Appelaar in Geldrop

We are receiving a grant of nearly €1.4 million from the Beethoven Wonen program for the redevelopment of the Appelaar. Thanks to this funding, the municipality, in collaboration with the housing authority Woonbedrijf, will be able to accelerate the implementation of plans to build approximately 160 new public housing units.

Woonbedrijf will receive a total of €1.8 million under the VEX scheme (Financial Contribution for Accelerating Housing Construction: Beethoven Real Estate Management, Eindhoven Metropolitan Region). This scheme is designed to accelerate housing construction projects in the region.

The contribution consists of a €1.4 million grant and €0.4 million in co-financing from the municipality. These funds will (partially) offset the financial shortfall resulting from the high costs of the redevelopment.

From 82 to 160 homes

There are currently 82 outdated duplex homes in De Appelaar. A study by Woonbedrijf shows that these homes no longer meet modern standards and cannot be renovated or made sustainable in a responsible manner. For this reason, the existing homes will be replaced by approximately 160 new homes. In doing so, the project makes a significant contribution to the housing development goals in Geldrop-Mierlo.

Important step

Alderman van Gestel: "This grant is a huge boost for the redevelopment of the Appelaar. Thanks to this funding, we can accelerate the construction of approximately 160 new homes. That’s good news for those looking for a home and for the future of the neighborhood. This marks an important step toward increasing the housing supply in Geldrop-Mierlo."

In his final week as Alderman , Van Gestel Alderman the importance of the project: “It’s wonderful to Alderman able Alderman conclude my term as Alderman with concrete results like this. De Appelaar demonstrates what’s possible when the municipality, the housing association, and the national government work together. This project will truly make a difference for current and future residents.”

Positive review

The municipality had previously submitted a grant application for the project. At the time, the application was not approved, partly because there was significant competition from other projects in the region and the plans were less developed. Since then, preparations have progressed further and implementation is closer to becoming a reality. This has led to a positive evaluation and the award of the grant.

Pick up the pace

Roy Beijnsberger, CEO of Woonbedrijf: “I’m very pleased with this contribution. It helps us, together with the municipality, to really pick up the pace in De Appelaar. That’s especially important right now. It allows us to respond more quickly to the enormous demand for affordable housing and provide more people with a nice home.”

In the coming period, the municipality and Woonbedrijf will continue to develop the plans. Residents and nearby residents will be involved in the next steps and kept informed about the project’s future schedule. More information can be found on the “Future of the Akert Neighborhoodpage.
