Update: Asian tiger mosquitoes found again in Mierlo
Asian tiger mosquitoes have once again been found in Mierlo. The Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) discovered more mosquitoes in early October. As a result, the NVWA is expanding the area where measures are being taken to control the mosquitoes. Residents in the new area have received a letter regarding this matter.
The NVWA has been combating the Asian tiger mosquito in Mierlo for some time now. Because mosquitoes have been found again, the control efforts will continue and the treatment area will be expanded. The measures are expected to last until the end of the mosquito season, in November 2026.
Knocking on residents' doors
The NVWA removes standing water where mosquitoes can breed. If that is not possible, the NVWA treats the water with a substance that kills mosquito larvae. Mosquito traps are also set up to monitor whether the control measures are effective. NVWA staff and pest control technicians from B2 Pest Control may knock on residents’ doors to ask if they can inspect their yards. The municipality of Geldrop-Mierlo is aware of these measures.
What can you do yourself?
Residents can also help combat the Asian tiger mosquito. The mosquito lays its eggs in small amounts of standing water. Therefore, check your yard, balcony, and other areas around your home regularly. For example, pour out water from buckets, flowerpots, plant saucers, and other objects where water collects.
The Asian tiger mosquito can be recognized by the distinctive white stripes on its black body and legs. Under certain conditions, this mosquito can transmit tropical diseases. It is therefore important to prevent the mosquito from spreading further.
