Keep an eye on your belongings—Irish travelers are on the move!
In the spring and fall, the police regularly receive reports of so-called “Irish travelers” (Irish handymen) operating in the area. We are receiving reports again this fall and would like to warn you.
Practices of Irish Travellers
So-called Irish travelers go door-to-door and, often using smooth talk and being pushy, offer to do odd jobs for you. Think, for example, of roof repairs. They ask for an advance payment but disappear after receiving it. Or they do a poor job and demand a much higher price than was agreed upon beforehand, which may even be accompanied by threats. These scammers often specifically target their victims; the elderly are particularly vulnerable. The Irish handymen often appear professional and are usually part of a traveling group, hence the term “travelers.”
Don't fall for sales pitches
The best advice is to ignore any offers, not let these people in, and, in particular, warn older people in your community about these kinds of practices.
Report suspicious situations
Stay alert. If you see Irish travelers in your neighborhood, call the police immediately at 112. In other cases, you can report the incident to the police at 0900 8844. If possible, note down physical descriptions and license plate numbers. This will help the police understand where and when Irish travelers are active in our municipality so they can respond more effectively.
Together we can make it safer!
