Have you spotted an Asian hornet? Report it!
The Asian hornet is becoming increasingly common in the Netherlands. They are usually not dangerous, but in crowded areas they can cause a nuisance. The Asian hornet is a species of wasp that has been present in the Netherlands for several years. This wasp is native to Asia. The species is spreading rapidly. That is why we call it an invasive alien species. The Asian hornet causes problems for nature. It preys on honeybees and other insects that are important for our flowers and plants. To protect biodiversity, it is important that the Asian hornet does not spread further.
Identify the Asian hornet
The Asian hornet can be identified by the following characteristics:
- Length: between 2 and 3 centimeters long
- Black breastplate
- Black antennas
- Yellow tips on the legs

The Asian hornet builds two types of nests:
Spring litter
These nests are small and are often located in sheltered spots where you are more likely to come across them. For example, in a cavity wall, shed, birdhouse, or carport.
Summer Nest
By summer, the spring nest becomes too small. The hornets then build a new nest, often high up in trees. These nests can grow as large as a medicine ball. Are you planning to prune a tree or hedge this summer? Before you start, check to see if there’s a nest in it.

What does the congregation do?
The municipality reviews every report. The presence of the Asian hornet requires a careful assessment of risks in public spaces. These risks are closely linked to how heavily a location is used by people. The more activity there is, the greater the likelihood of disturbances or incidents.
