Voters with disabilities: What is provided for you at the polling place?

Being able to vote independently is not a given for everyone. For example, because you are in a wheelchair or have poor eyesight. Even if you do not understand Dutch well, all the information can be difficult to understand.

To ensure that you can vote as independently as possible, a number of measures have been put in place at the polling station. Assistive devices are also available.

Before voting

Before you vote, you can prepare.

  • You can find information about the elections and what you need to vote on the websites www.elkestemtelt.nl and , as well as on our website www.geldrop-mierlo.nl/verkiezingen.
  • We will publish the spoken candidate lists on the municipality's website in good time before March 18, 2026.
  • For more information about the candidates you can vote for and their positions, please visit: https://geldropmierlo.allekandidaten.nl/.
  • Would you like an explanation of the city council in plain language? Or of how voting works? Then visit www.stemjijook.nl. It’s a great website that provides explanations not only in text but also through easy-to-understand videos. You can also find plenty of information about the elections and how voting works in plain language at www.Steffie.nl.

An accessible polling place

The municipality ensures that the polling place is as accessible as possible. Also for voters with physical disabilities.

  • You can find a polling place near you on the municipality’s website or at www.waarismijnstemlokaal.nl. You can also check there to see how accessible that polling place is. Your voter registration card also lists a polling place near you.
  • There is handicapped parking close to the entrance of each polling place.
  • There are signs that say "polling place" or "polling station" to direct you to the entrance.
  • The polling place is accessible to people in wheelchairs, mobility scooters and people with walkers.
  • The municipality ensures that there are no obstacles in the way at the polling station.

Help at the polling place

At the polling place, there are tools to help you vote.

  • There is a list of candidates hanging in every polling place in large letters.
  • There is at least one voting booth with a low writing surface, for voters in wheelchairs.
  • There is a magnifying glass with lighting. You can also use your own phone with magnification or another electronic magnifier or camera.
  • There is a list of candidates in Braille at each polling place.
  • At the polling place, a polling station member may explain to you how to use the ballot paper. The polling place member will help you outside the voting booth.
  • Are you unable to vote yourself due to your physical condition? Then someone may help you in the voting booth. You may bring someone with you or ask a poll worker for help.

Do you require additional assistance to cast your vote independently? If so, please contact our election team. You can email us at verkiezingen@geldrop-mierlo.nl

Prokkel polling station

The municipality of Geldrop-Mierlo considers it important to facilitate citizens with disabilities as much as possible so that they can vote independently. We also consider it very important that people with disabilities can participate in society. That is why we have two Prokkel polling stations in the municipality of Geldrop-Mierlo: polling station 2 (the town hall) and polling station 4 (the Zesgehuchten community center). At a Prokkel polling station, someone with a (mild) intellectual disability works at the polling station. Together with another polling station member, they form a Prokkel duo. You can read more about this at https://www.prokkel.nl/inclusieve-stembureaus/.

If you have further questions, please email verkiezingen@geldrop-mierlo.nl.
