Rehabilitation Heggestraat-Nieuwendijk (partial).

We are planning to redesign Heggestraat (between Heilige Geeststraat and Stationsstraat) and Nieuwendijk (between Stationsstraat and the traffic circle Mierloseweg). A public participation procedure has been carried out for this. Meanwhile, the Municipal Executive has determined the final redesign plan.

Reason

Heggestraat has dated road design. The speed of motorized traffic often does not match the set speed limit of 30 km/hour. This is partly caused by the asphalt pavement and the wide road profile. Furthermore, the sewers need to be replaced and the existing road construction is in urgent need of maintenance. Nieuwendijk, between Stationsstraat and Mierloseweg, is part of the city center vision adopted by the council in 2013. This includes an integral redesign of the public space around the H. Brigida church.

Plans

Heggestraat

The road section Heggestraat 24-50 has a more traditional road layout in which a small difference in height between the roadway and the sidewalk is maintained. A design with more greenery and extra parking spaces has been chosen. The roadway in the Heggestraat will be narrowed and will be paved with elements, as a result of which the speed limit of 30 km/hour will follow more naturally from the road design.

The boundary of the zone for paid parking and permit holder parking remains unchanged.

As far as the northernmost part of the Heggestraat and the Nieuwendijk is concerned, the applied materialization of the Korte Kerkstraat and Heuvel, and thus the ambition and quality level, will also be extended to this phase of the redevelopment of the center. For the part Heggestraat 24 - 50 a more traditional paving is proposed.

Nieuwendijk

The lane of Nieuwendijk will be narrowed from approximately 6.30 m to 5.8 m. This is a usual lane width for roads with some traffic function within a 30 km/h area. At this width, cars and cyclists can pass each other safely.

The roadway of Nieuwendijk will be constructed of baked clinker, in the same bond and color scheme as the northern part of Bogardeind, between Hooghuis and Langstraat.

Supply to the catering and retail establishments will remain unchanged from the roadway. On this part of Nieuwendijk, the speed limit will also be reduced from 50 to 30 km/hour.

Pedestrian area

The sidewalks along Nieuwendijk and the northern part of Heggestraat are at the same height as the roadway and are often bordered by a green strip or a parking strip. This creates a more consistent image with the northern part of the Bogardeind (between the Hooghuis and Langstraat) where the entire public space was also placed on one level.

Crossings

A crosswalk is provided at the Nieuwendijk/Korte Kerkstraat/Heuvel and Stationsstraat/Heggestraat intersections. Because the roadway is at the same level as the pedestrian sections, there is no difference in height at these crossings.

Green

In general, the surface area of greenery increases due to the removal of the exposed bicycle lanes on Nieuwendijk and further due to a narrowing of the road profile in Heggestraat. The trees in the southwest corner of the traffic circle will be replaced by new specimens that cause less root pressure.

Sewer replacement Heggestraat

The sewer system is 50 years old and at the end of its technical lifespan. When replacing the existing sewers, a rainwater sewer (infiltration sewer) will also be constructed. The paved surface will be connected to this. In this way we ensure that clean rainwater does not go to the sewage treatment plant, but is infiltrated into the soil.

Parking regulation site behind Korte Kerkstraat

In the final redevelopment plan, there is a limited decrease of 4 parking spaces on the northern part of Heggestraat. This will be compensated by moving permit holder parking to the area behind Korte Kerkstraat (entrance from Heggestraat). The municipality will take a designation decision to this end.
