Compulsory identification from 14 years of age: always carry a valid ID with you
In the Netherlands, there is a duty of identification for everyone 14 years and older. This means that you must always carry a valid proof of identity - such as a passport, identity card or driver's license - with you when you go out the door.
Government agencies such as the police, military police and special investigating officers (boa's) may ask for your proof of identity. If you cannot show it, you risk a fine. More information about the identification requirement can be found at rijksoverheid.
Are you crossing the border? Then a driver's license is no longer valid identification.
Don't have a valid ID? Make an appointment at www.geldrop-mierlo.nl/afspraak-maken to request proof of identity.
