Inclement weather and warm gathering Strabrechtse Heide
As many as 80 people braved storm Benjamin to attend the walk-in evening on Oct. 23 about the future of the Strabrechtse Heide. In the Moorsele Hoeve in Lierop, information was exchanged about the subareas Goorloop, Sterkselsche Aa, Peelrijt-Kleine Aa and the Natura 2000 area Strabrechtse Heide.
The wind outside was inclement, the atmosphere inside warm and positive. There were good, sometimes critical conversations, and visitors appreciated the open format and direct contact with area partners. There were presentations and themed tables on the challenges facing agriculture, nature restoration and water retention in the area.
Enjoying nature
There were many visitors who know the area well: they see that hard work is being done to strengthen nature and had questions about exactly how this is being done. They also indicated that they have seen nature change due to drought, among other things. They shared their concerns about how people treat nature: from stray dogs to trash in streams. At the same time, the desire to be able to continue to recreate and enjoy nature was sounded.
Farmers worry
Important noises also came from the agricultural community. Some farmers were concerned about their future: what does the rewetting of the area mean for their business, and what functions will remain possible in the future?
"The meeting showed how much commitment there is to this area. We are facing major challenges, but it is precisely by staying together in conversation and acting together that we can work towards a future in which nature, agriculture and water are in balance with each other," said Willy Hanssen, chairman of the steering committee GGA Strabrechtse Heide.
