Adolescent - Child and School
After elementary school, your child will enter secondary school. This is a big step for your child and for you as a parent. It is important to find a school that suits the level of your child and where your child feels at home. Therefore, it is good to know what is involved in secondary education. Schools provide information in their school guide. At special information evenings, on websites and in brochures and guides, you can get a lot of information about the schools.
You can find a lot of information about secondary education on the Raising website.
Compulsory education
Your child must attend school until the year they turn 16. At 16, your child does not have a HAVO, VWO or MBO (level 2 or higher) diploma? Then they have to go to school until they get such a diploma. Or until your child turns 18.
For more information, visit the website of the Rijksoverheid.
Difficulty or problems at school
Is your child having trouble or problems in school? Contact your child's mentor. He or she can tell you how things are going at school. You can also ask questions here. The mentor ensures that your child gets the right guidance. You can find more information on the website Opvoeden.
Pupil Transport
Pupil transport is transportation to and from school for children with disabilities who cannot go to school by themselves. Pupil transport is for children who attend (special) primary education or (special) secondary education. But only if they cannot go to school by themselves due to their disability.
You apply for pupil transportation at the municipality's CMD. You can read more about it at Pupil Transport.
