Plan for schools approved Coming years big investment in elementary school Geldrop-Mierlo
Last Tuesday, the City Council adopted the IHP. IHP is an abbreviation for Integral Housing Plan. This contains the housing needs for education and the consequences for the various school buildings in our municipality and the developments we will do there. With this decision, the municipal council also released 56 million euros to realize a total of five new school buildings in the coming years.
These five new school buildings will provide new housing for seven schools and replace nine old buildings! In addition, these new buildings will also have space for other users, such as child care or the neighborhood association. The first multi-purpose building will be built at Skandia. Preparations for this are already underway.
Good education is important
In Geldrop-Mierlo we find it important that all children can follow good education in a safe and future-proof environment. In the coming years we face a major task: a number of school buildings are outdated and no longer meet today's requirements. That is why we are investing in the renovation, sustainability and expansion of our educational facilities. This task is linked to the Integral Housing Plan (IHP), in which the municipality and school boards together determine which schools will be tackled and when.
Future-proof
Alderman Frans Stravers: "We are now taking a big step towards future-proof education in our municipality. With this investment we ensure that every child - regardless of where they live - receives education in a healthy, sustainable and inspiring building. That is an investment in our future and in equal opportunities for all children. Moreover, these new schools will be places that benefit the entire district."
Collaboration
School construction requires a long breath and good cooperation. We look at more than just bricks: we also want the buildings to contribute to broad social goals, such as meeting, sports, development and Health in the neighborhood. This task contributes to Vision 2044 by investing in equal opportunities, development and strong neighborhoods. Children grow up in an environment that invites them to learn, meet and participate.
District Activities
New school buildings can be of great value to the neighborhood in which they are located. Bringing functions such as childcare, neighborhood activities and meeting places under one roof creates a lively and accessible building where young and old can find each other. This makes the school not only a place of learning, but also a beating heart of the neighborhood. This strengthens social cohesion and contributes to a pleasant living environment for all residents.
First steps already visible
The first project from the IHP is in the Skandia neighborhood. Preparations for a new multipurpose building in this district are in full swing. In recent weeks, a lot of work has been done to construct a temporary construction road, so that in the week of May 20, 2025 the units for the temporary emergency classrooms can be placed. After the summer vacations, the temporary emergency classrooms will be put into use and the demolition of the current school building Beneden Beekloop can begin. This demolition will start in September 2025 and take about three months. So that in early 2026 a start can be made with the realization of the new multifunctional building to be built. The construction period is expected to last one and a half years and the building can be completed before the summer vacations 2027.
