Whether it is water falling from the sky or wastewater produced by homes and businesses; all water must be disposed of safely and in an environmentally friendly manner. The municipality is responsible for collecting and transporting wastewater that comes from homes and businesses. Homeowners are responsible for connecting themselves to the sewer system. From this connection point, the municipality takes over the responsibility. The municipality is also responsible for Health for excess rainwater and groundwater. The costs are raised by levying sewerage charges from the citizens. The responsibility of the municipality of Geldrop-Mierlo is described in the Municipal Sewerage Plan.

Sewer maintenance

Maintenance of the municipal sewer system is expensive. Every year the municipality spends 900,000 euros on cleaning, inspections and repairs. Pieces of sewers are also replaced every year; this will increase in the future.

Water management

Water management is a shared responsibility of the state, the province and the water board. The province is responsible for groundwater management and establishes protected areas for drinking water preparation. Drinking water company Brabant Water is responsible for the production and distribution of drinking water.

Water boards

The water boards De Dommel and Aa and Maas manage the surface water in the municipality. They are responsible for the quantity and quality of the water. They ensure that the rivers and streams can drain the water properly. The water boards are also responsible for the groundwater level in the undeveloped area. In the Water Management Plan, the water board states what its goals are and how it intends to achieve them. These include measures such as constructing, maintaining and managing dams, pumping stations and sewage treatment plants.

Flooding

Climate change and subsidence increase the likelihood of flooding. To prevent flooding as much as possible, the policy of the municipality and water boards is to retain rain in the area where it falls. If this is not possible, the water is stored and later drained away. You can read more about this on the page Tackling flooding.

Groundwater

In places where there are groundwater problems, to the extent that the problems do not have a structural cause, the municipality shall investigate the cause of these problems. The municipality takes measures in the public area as far as possible to limit adverse effects of high groundwater levels. More information about groundwater can be found on the High Groundwater page.

Surface water

Besides the Kleine Dommel and the Beekloop, the De Dommel Water Board manages a large number of watercourses. You can see exactly which watercourses are managed by the Water Board on the Water Board's lay-out map.

The Eindhoven canal is managed by the municipality of Eindhoven. All bridges and roads and bike paths along the canal are also managed by Eindhoven municipality.
