Marriage and registered partnership

What is it?

Do you want to get married or enter into a registered partnership? At a location other than the villa and the old city hall, you must first make a reservation there.

Using the green button below, the reservation can be recorded with us and notification of intended marriage/partnership can be made immediately.

Notify a marriage or partnership registration no later than two weeks in advance and no more than one year before the desired date.

Difference between marriage and registered partnership

A partnership registration is almost the same as a marriage. The rights and obligations for partners are the same. You also need witnesses for both ceremonies (minimum two, maximum four).

There are a number of differences:

  • When you get married, you say "yes" to each other. With a registered partnership, this is not required.
  • A registered partnership, if you do not have minor children, can end outside of court. With a marriage, you must always go to court to get a divorce.
  • The registered partnership has no legal separation, marriage does. For example, in a marriage, you say yes. This is not required in a partnership registration.
  • A registered partnership is not recognized in all countries. A marriage, however, is legally valid in all countries.

What to do.

If you have made reservations at another fixed location, or if you want the marriage/partnership to take place in the villa or the old town hall, you can record the date with us and digitally submit the notice of intended marriage. To do this, you must both log in separately via DigiD.

Notice:

A digital reservation and notification of intended marriage/partnership can be made if you both have the Dutch nationality, or are citizens of an EU/EEA member state or Switzerland, or hold a permanent residence permit (regular or asylum). If (one of) both of you do not meet or comply with the above Requirements, digital reservation and notification cannot be made. Please contact the Civil Registry Office at 040 - 289 38 93 or balie-inwoners@geldrop-mierlo.nl, and we will be happy to assist you.

Booking date and notification

If you have any questions, please contact us by phone at (040) 289 38 93.

How does it work?

You make the notification in the municipality where you are getting married.

  • Report your plans at least two weeks and up to one year in advance to the municipality where you are getting married.
  • Indicate who your witnesses will be during the ceremony. These persons must be of legal age. You may have a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 4 witnesses. You must provide your own witnesses; the municipality cannot provide them.
  • If you and your partner have a registered partnership with each other and wish to convert it into a marriage, please contact the Civil Registry Office by calling (040) 289 38 93.

Do you need to submit documents coming from abroad? Then keep in mind that two weeks may be too short.

What should I upload?

  • Valid ID of you and your partner;
  • copy of the valid IDs of your witnesses;
  • if the marriage/registered partnership is performed at a location other than the villa or the Old Town Hall: the reservation confirmation from the location.

What does it cost?

The fee for the celebration of a marriage and registration of a partnership applies to any permanent wedding location in the municipality.
