Pali and municipality agree on purchase price of former slaughterhouse

For years, local residents have experienced odor and noise pollution from Pali despite all the measures the company has taken. That is why Pali and the municipality signed a letter of intent in 2023 to explore ending the slaughterhouse at its current location.

The agreement also stipulated that the municipality could be the first party to purchase Pali's sites at Industriepark 10 and Emopad 15. The condition, however, was that Pali and the municipality would agree on the purchase price. In recent months, several constructive talks have been held with Pali and both sites have now been appraised. Based on this, both parties came to an agreement on the purchase price. With this agreement, the departure of the slaughterhouse from Geldrop-Mierlo could be made final. Pali has since transferred the slaughter activities to the Compaxo group in Zevenaar. The city council still needs to make a final decision on the purchase at its meeting on December 9.

City Council discusses proposal

The next step in the process is to submit the purchase to the City Council for decision. So it is now up to the City Council to give the final green light. In doing so, the council must weigh the purchase costs against the income generated by the issuance of the land as a business location (with the certainty, of course, that no slaughterhouse will return). To this end, a business case has been prepared, weighing the costs against the benefits.

The City Council will first discuss the piece in the Space Committee on Nov. 18 and make a final decision on the proposal at its meeting on Dec. 9.

No deal

If the City Council decides not to purchase Pali, there is a possibility that Pali will still make efforts at the current the site to expand slaughter capacity from approximately 750,000 to 1,250,000 pigs annually. It could also be possible for Pali to sell both sites to a third party, which could resume slaughter operations at the current site.

Revision Permit

Pali has submitted several applications in recent years to change the operations or layout of the site. These applications will be assessed in a bundle in a so-called revision permit. In light of the above developments, ODZOB has paused the process of preparing the revision permit for Pali. Should the purchase of the sites fail, the process of the revision permit will be resumed. If the municipality agrees to the purchase, this process will be discontinued permanently.
