Voters with disabilities: What is provided for you at the polling place?
Being able to vote independently is not obvious to everyone. For example, because you are in a wheelchair or cannot see well. To ensure that you can still vote as independently as possible, a number of things have been arranged at the polling station. There are also aids available.
Before voting
Before you vote, you can prepare.
- You can read information about the election and what you need to vote on the website www.elkestemtelt.nl and on our website at www.geldrop-mierlo.nl/verkiezingen.
- Listen to the spoken candidate lists.
- A candidate list in Braille is available at City Hall.
- Would you like an explanation of the European Parliament in understandable language? Or how voting works? Then check out www.stemjijook.nl. A nice website explaining not only with text but also with understandable videos. Also at www.Steffie.nl (search for Elections) you will find a lot of information about the elections and how voting works.
An accessible polling place
The municipality ensures that the polling place is as accessible as possible. Also for voters with physical disabilities.
- You can find polling stations near you on the municipality's website or www.waarismijnstemlokaal.nl. You can also read here how accessible that polling place is.
- There is handicapped parking close to the entrance of each polling place.
- There are signs that say "polling place" or "polling station" to direct you to the entrance.
- The polling place is accessible to people in wheelchairs, mobility scooters and people with walkers.
- The municipality also ensures that there are no obstacles in the way at the polling place.
Help at the polling place
At the polling place, there are tools to help you vote.
- There is a list of candidates hanging in every polling place in large letters.
- There is at least one voting booth with a low writing surface, for voters in wheelchairs.
- There is a magnifying glass with lighting. You can also use your own phone with magnification or another electronic magnifier or camera.
- There is a list of candidates in Braille at each polling place.
- At the polling place, a polling station member may explain to you how to use the ballot paper. The polling place member will help you outside the voting booth.
- Are you unable to vote yourself due to your physical condition? Then someone may help you in the voting booth. You may bring someone with you or ask a poll worker for help.
Do you need extra help to cast your votes independently? If so, please contact our elections team. You can email verkiezingen@geldrop-mierlo.nl.
Prokkel polling station
The municipality of Geldrop-Mierlo considers it important to facilitate citizens with disabilities as much as possible to vote independently. In addition, we find it important that people with disabilities can participate in society. That is why also this year the town hall has been designated as a Stimucounter polling station. You can read more about this in the article "June 6, 2024 Election Day".
