Geldrop-Mierlo, a place with a heart for greenery

Geldrop-Mierlo is an attractive green municipality with a varied landscape: various creek valleys, forests, old arable land, heathland and broek ontginningslandschappen. Within these are the built-up cores.

Our green policy plan (2014-2024) focuses primarily on public green space. It is the basis for the design, construction, management and maintenance of green public spaces. Livability, sustainability and quality are the keywords here.

Forest and nature areas owned by the municipality are not part of the green policy plan. These areas are included in the Forest and Nature Management Framework Memorandum 2024-2029.

The green policy plan is made up of separate modules. Below you can read briefly what each module is about.

Module Frameworks

This describes the principles and frameworks on which all other modules are based.

Module Structures

The main tree avenues and green areas are included in the tree and green structure. The greenery and trees in structures are important to many of our residents. Structures are therefore more heavily protected than other green space.

Module Protection

With the green policy, we want to achieve an attractive and sustainable green living environment. This requires the protection of greenery and trees, for example in developments in public spaces. We do this by imposing compensation if trees have to be cut down or if greenery has to disappear.

Module Setup

There are many things to consider when designing green spaces. For example, maintenance (close planting so that weeds have less chance) and biodiversity (choice of plants that attract butterflies and bees). But safety (no high greenery along the bike path) is also important. Various principles are described in the design module.

Green management module

This module describes the way we manage the green spaces in our municipality.

Tree management module

This includes how the municipality handles its duty of care as a tree owner. It also describes how and when maintenance measures, such as pruning, are carried out.

Module Nuisance

This module describes the types of nuisances we face in public green spaces and how we deal with them. The module is limited to trees because about greenery such as shrubs and grass, little to no nuisance is reported.

Valuable trees

The many trees around us, in streets, parks, yards and private gardens, make an important contribution to our living environment and health. They are providers of fresh air and coolness in today's hot summers. They provide welcome help with water collection and storeCO2 in various ways. But trees are also atmospheric and thus affect our well-being.

Because we want to protect the value of the greenery around us, we have a valuable-trees list in Geldrop-Mierlo. There are both municipal trees and private trees on the list. Valuable trees are extra protected. Normally an inhabitant of Geldrop or Mierlo does not need to apply for an environmental permit to cut down a tree. However, valuable trees do require a permit.

You can read more about valuable trees in Chapter 3 of the Protection module.
