On November 1, the ice control season started again. In October, our field service colleagues held a so-called "Fleet Review. All the equipment was tested and everything is ready for use again! The current Map of the gritting routes can be found below.

Spreading routes

The municipality must control slipperiness on roads within built-up areas. The municipality gritters when the roads become slippery due to freezing, snow or sleet. By doing so, the municipality tries to prevent dangerous situations on slippery roads and bicycle paths.

The municipality grits on through routes, such as main roads and bicycle paths, bus routes and access roads to neighborhoods. You can find the different routes below.

Spreading and snow removal

Gladness control is done by gritting and clearing snow. The municipality grits preventively whenever possible. Snow removal can only be done afterwards, after a snow shower. Five trucks are used simultaneously. The gritting routes start at the yard on the Ambachtweg in Mierlo. This is where the gritting machines are parked and where the salt is stored.

On average, a gritting operation lasts three hours. Snow clearing is done with special snow removal equipment and is much slower than gritting. If we also clear snow on all gritting routes, the entire action takes about six hours.

Spreading yourself

The pedestrian areas, residential streets and sidewalks are not gritted by the municipality. The gritting has little effect here. Because there is little traffic, it takes a long time for the salt to take effect. We cannot grit the sidewalks because the sidewalk tiles do not have enough bearing capacity for the heavy machines we use when gritting.

Unfortunately, because the municipality cannot go everywhere, we ask that you clean your own sidewalk. Help your neighbors if they have mobility problems. Health that you always have enough salt to grit at home. Then you can keep the sidewalk in front of your home free of snow and ice. Road salt is usually available at hardware stores and garden centers. The municipality does not provide salt to individuals or companies and organizations

Road salt should always be used in moderation, however, because in large quantities it is harmful to the environment. When it thaws, melt water sinks into the soil, and if too much road salt is left behind, it can affect the roots of trees and shrubs.
