Birth declaration
What is it?
Congratulations on the birth of your child. To make this official announcement, you will report the birth within 3 days. Is the third day a Saturday, Sunday or holiday? Then you may also make the declaration on the first working day after.
You declare the birth in the municipality where your child was born. This is required by law.
What to do.
Digital birth registration
In most cases, you can file a tax return digitally.
Requirements digital declaration:
- You are married or registered partners (no cohabitation contract), or have acknowledged unborn foetus, or there is no father or co-mother in sight.
The child's father or mother can make birth registration. The co-mother can declare birth if a certificate of acknowledgment of unborn foetus has been drawn up.
Birth registration at the front desk by appointment
You declare birth at the front desk,
- If you are not married and wish to make recognition at the time of the birth declaration;
- In the case of duo mothers where no recognition of unborn foetus has been made;
- When a person other than the child's father/mother or mother files the birth certificate.
How does it work?
The mother, father or duo mother reports the birth.
If they cannot do this, one of the following can do it for them:
- Every person who was present at the birth.
- In the case of a home birth: a fellow resident of the house.
- In the case of a hospital delivery: the head of the hospital or an employee authorized by the head.
If this too is not possible, the declaration will be made by or on behalf of the mayor of the municipality where your child was born.
Birth certificate
The municipality prepares a birth certificate after the declaration. The birth certificate contains your child's first name or first names and last name. It also contains the parents' names, date, time and place of birth. If you wish, you can purchase a copy of the birth certificate on the spot.
I'm late with the birth declaration. What now?
The most important thing is that you still report it to the municipality as soon as possible.
The registrar notifies the Public Prosecutor's Office (OM) that you are late in filing the birth certificate. You may be fined. The OM determines the amount of the fine.
What does it cost?
There is no charge for registering a child.
What do I need?
- Your valid ID;
- A valid ID of the mother from whom the child was born.
Possibly bring:
- the certificate of birth from the hospital or midwife;
- Your marriage or partnership booklet, if you want the municipality to include your child's name in it;
- A copy of the deed of recognition of unborn child. You received this copy at the time of recognition;
- A statement from the Foundation for Donor Data on Artificial Fertilization if the donor is anonymous;
- A certificate of registration indicating your marital status, if you live abroad;
- A doctor's statement, if asked for.
