12 days to plant 119 trees in our community

Geldrop-Mierlo plants about 100 trees every year. This year there are 119 including lime trees, elms, maples and hawthorns. How does it work? Stefan Valkenburg, a field service employee is happy to tell you!

Preparation

Every tree in our municipality has its own number and is looked at once every 4 years by one of our arborists. If the arborist notices a defect disease or declining condition) on the tree, a felling permit may be requested immediately or the tree may be looked at annually to see if the defect is getting worse.

When the tree is uprooted, we immediately check whether or not a new tree will come back. And also what kind. If a tree comes back at the same location, the stump is removed in its entirety. Outside, the arborists decide on the spot how big to make the new hole for the tree. We then perform "soil improvement measures." Often this is adding compost to the soil so the tree can move forward for years to come.

Once all the holes are prepared, we signal the district superintendent to have the trees come. Since we then know how many days/weeks are in between, we orgen that we have the remaining materials needed in stock (tree stakes, casting edges and so on) and make a schedule for planting.

Planting now!

So this year 119 trees in 12 days. Various tree species such as lime, elm, maple and hawthorn will be put this year. All these 119 trees will be monitored for three years. We then pay particular attention to the moisture content in the soil and from there make the decision whether to water or whether it can wait a while. After three years, this period of watering stops and the tree is self-sufficient. From then on, it's up to the arborists to make sure the tree keeps up with our pruning rounds.

Important work

Important in this process is what happens in the soil during our work. If we mess up the soil, the tree will wither away and never reach the desired end result. And even with too little water, the tree will die and we will unfortunately have to put up another tree the following year.
